SWITCH: Managing Water for the City of the Future

Managing Water for the City of the Future

SWITCH - Demonstrations

Demonstration activities occurred in Accra, Alexandria, Beijing, Belo Horizonte, Birmingham, Bogota, Chongqing, the Emscher Region of Germany, Lima, Łódż, Tel Aviv and Zaragoza.

The purpose of these demonstrations was to translate the results of the SWITCH research into tangible and socially-relevant "on-the-ground" activities which could be used to test the research assumptions regarding performance, costs, community acceptance and other factors.

Demonstrations covered a wide spectrum of the water cycle from demand management through to water recycling. The demonstrations in each city were planned through the City Learning Alliance, to address local priorities in accordance with the local environment.

The SWITCH assumption was that the combination of strategic planning, including understanding of the institutional and regulatory environment, along with real demonstrations would enable rapid up-scaling of the demonstrations to mainstream activities. In some SWITCH cities such as Łódż, Beijing and Belo Horizonte this assumption has been validated.
